Fêtes Révolutionnaires

In 1985, EDF built on the Eau d'Olle, an affluent of the Romanche, the most powerful hydroelectric dam of the Alps. Its history is recounted in the interesting Musée Hydrelec opened by EDF.

At the turn of this new century, EDF, plans to remove the hundred – year – old power plants which are still working on the Romanche and to replace them with a sole installation which would partly be built underground. The valley of the Romanche which banks have been modified throughout the centuries by its industrial past, will soon witness major modifications.

The only power plant to remain would be the astonishing plant of the Vernes. This work with its huge baluster staircase, built during the World War I, is now registered on the supplementary directory of historical monuments. The plant perimeter is closed but is partly visible from the road leading to Oisans, when one come up to Livet.

In 1946, every power plants built on the Romanche which were the property of industrials were nationalised and taken over by EDF.

During the following decade, the company built two more damson the Drac, one in Monteynard and the other one in Notre Dame de Commiers. The local landscape was radically changed. A section of the Drac is now almost dry but new nautical activities are now possible thanks to the artificial lake in Monteynard – Avignonet.

In 1947, the SIERG (Syndicat Intercommunal des Eaux / an association shared by several municipalities) in Vizille, created channelling wells in order to draw water from the Romanche alluvial sheet. This water is naturally good and does not need any treatment, it feeds today, more than 200,000 inhabitants.
