Fêtes Révolutionnaires

Alexandre Debelle (1805-1897), Assemblée des trois ordres du Dauphiné reçus au château de Vizille par Claude Perier, le 21 juillet 1788, 1862. Huile sur toile. Acquis en 1983. INV. MRF 1983-7

In June 1788, Grenoble rose up. Feeling threatened by the rise of the commodities, several protesting families gave the member's of the parliament of Dauphiné the responsibility of bringing their demands to the King of France Louis the 16th. The negotiators obtained nothing from the Parisians ministers, and are thrown out from the city of Grenoble. The anger of the working class spreads. On June 7th , 1788, the governor of the Dauphiné sends his garrison in order to repress the Grenoble rioters who climbed on the roofs and threw a hail of tiles on the soldiers. It is the famous Day of the Tiles, the first form of the revolt winch will become the Révolution.

On July 21st, 491 representatives of the Three Orders of the Dauphiné - 50 priests, 165 noblemen and 276 Tiers Etat representatives ; among whom Mounier and Barnave-gathered together at the Castle of Vizille in the room of the jeu de paume. The assembly gave a decisive impulse to the movement which was favourable to the fiscal and political reform. The French Révolution has just been born in Vizille.

During the Monarchy Restoration, after the Hundred Napoleonic Days episode, it is in Vizille again that the conspiracy led by Meunier will start, in favour of the return of Napoleon the 1st. It will end up in a blood bath at the doors of Grenoble.
