Situated in the cemetery, the monastery of Saint Mary of Visiliae is the most ancient construction in Vizille ; it said to have already be there as early as the year 726.
The Cluny abbey became its owner and had a priory church built there as early as the year 993. On the front of 12th century church, one can see a nice Romanesque gate, classified as a historical monument. The lintel and the tympanum are built in Marble of Vizille.
At the centre of the carved tympanum, one can see a Christ, whereas the Last Supper can be seen on the lintel. Heads and hands had been removed or mutilated by the Protestants during the wars of religion.
